Philanthropy

Dr Berro has undertaken three medical volunteering missions with the organisation SAMS Medical Missions, in 2015 and 2016. SAMS organises and facilitates medical missions to enable doctors, students, members and volunteers to take part in surgical and medical voluntary undertakings. As part of the mission, medical professionals travel to a specific area to support medical relief programmes and offer healthcare to Syrians both inside Syria and in refugee camps throughout Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Greece.

In April 2016, SAMS launched SAMS Global Response (SGR), a global platform aiming to offer quality healthcare to vulnerable populations and refugees by leveraging its expertise in the organisation and leadership of medical missions in challenging environments, along with its network of medical professionals. SGR has a focus on addressing urgent needs through specialised medical care, innovation and advocacy.

Neuropsychology

Dr Berro is a co-founder of the Brain Matters wellness programme. The Brain Matters centre is located in the heart of Dubai and is committed to providing high-quality mental health services for all age groups, including psychotherapy and neuropsychology. The centre is the first in the UAE dedicated to offering neuropsychological assessment and treatment services.

Neuropsychology is concerned with the way cognition and behaviour relate to the brain and wider nervous system. Professionals in this field often focus on the way illnesses of and injuries to the brain affect behavioural functions and cognition. Neuropsychology is both a clinical and experimental field of psychology, seeking to understand how the brain correlates to the mind via the study of neurological patients. The discipline shares concerns and concepts with neuropsychiatry and general behavioural neurology.

Handball

A former member of the Olympic handball team, Dr Berro continues to play the sport for the Handball Club Dubai team. Handball is a faced-paced sport played indoors, with opposing teams trying to score against each other by throwing the ball into a goal. Handball was first played in Germany and Scandinavia towards the end of the 19th century – this early version of the game was played outdoors, with indoor handball first introduced to Sweden in 1910. Between 1938 and 1966, separate World Championships hosted indoor and outdoor handball, and during this time the indoor version of the sport gained pre-eminence.
